Could your own belly fat help fight MS?
NCT ID NCT03461419
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether a patient's own fat cells, processed into a special mixture called stromal vascular fraction, can safely improve quality of life and slow nerve damage in multiple sclerosis. About 100 adults with stable MS who have lasting nerve problems will receive an IV infusion of their own cells. The trial is currently suspended, and it is too early to know if this approach works.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- autologous adipose-derived cellular stromal vascular fraction (AD-cSVF)
- What this could lead to
- If it works, this could point toward a new way to manage multiple sclerosis by using the body's own cells to calm the immune system.
- What could go wrong
- The trial is suspended and early-stage, with no phase assigned. It is small (100 people) and uses a complex procedure that may not show clear benefit or could cause side effects.
