Second dose of fat cells may offer new hope for Crohn's fistulas
NCT ID NCT07629245
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests the safety of giving a second injection of a patient's own frozen fat-derived cells (stromal vascular fraction) to treat anal fistulas that didn't heal in a previous trial. About 25 adults with Crohn's disease who still have active fistulas will receive the injection. The main goal is to check for infections, worsening incontinence, or other side effects over six months.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
cryopreserved autologous stromal vascular fraction (fat-derived cells)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could provide a safe, repeatable treatment option for people with Crohn's disease who have persistent anal fistulas that don't heal with standard care.
What could go wrong
This is an early-phase (1/2) safety study with only 25 participants, so it's too small to prove effectiveness. The treatment involves a second injection, and risks like infection or worsening incontinence are being closely monitored.
