Brain scans after stroke may unlock secrets of cognitive decline

NCT ID NCT05089331

First seen Jul 01, 2026 · Last updated Jul 01, 2026

Summary

This study follows 250 people who had a type of stroke called intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) to understand why some experience progressive cognitive decline. Participants undergo advanced brain scans and tests of thinking and movement at 12–24 months after their stroke, with follow-up assessments over the next year. Researchers will also analyze blood samples for signs of inflammation that might be linked to worsening brain function.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this could reveal why some people experience progressive cognitive decline after a hemorrhagic stroke and point toward ways to predict or prevent it.

What could go wrong

This is an observational study, not a treatment trial. It may identify patterns but cannot prove cause and effect, and results may not apply to all stroke survivors.
