New hope for stroke patients: clot removal in tiny brain arteries under trial

NCT ID NCT05983757

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether removing a blood clot from a smaller brain vessel (distal medium vessel) using a catheter-based procedure helps people recover better from a stroke than standard medical therapy alone. About 584 adults who had a stroke within the last 12 hours and cannot receive clot-busting drugs will be randomly assigned to either the clot removal procedure or standard care. The main goal is to see if the procedure leads to less disability 90 days after the stroke.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

endovascular thrombectomy (clot removal procedure using catheters and retrieval devices)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could establish a new standard treatment for strokes caused by blockages in smaller brain vessels, potentially improving recovery and reducing disability.

What could go wrong

This is an early-stage trial with 584 participants, and the procedure carries risks such as bleeding or vessel damage. It may not prove superior to standard medical therapy.
