Mindfulness may lower blood pressure in black women caring for loved ones with dementia
NCT ID NCT05721482
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026
Summary
This pilot study tested a telehealth program combining mindfulness, relaxation, and dietary advice (MIM-DASH) in 28 African American women over 40 who care for a family member with Alzheimer's and have high blood pressure. The goal was to see if the program could reduce stress and improve blood pressure control. Participants attended eight weekly group sessions online. The study measured changes in blood pressure, heart rate, and stress management practices.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Mindfulness-based stress reduction and dietary counseling (MIM-DASH)
What this could lead to
If successful, this approach could offer a practical, low-cost way to help Black female caregivers manage stress and control blood pressure, potentially reducing their risk of heart disease.
What could go wrong
This was a very small pilot study (28 participants) with no control group, so results may not apply broadly. The program requires time and commitment, and long-term benefits are unknown.
