Stress shown to disrupt ability to connect the dots in memory

NCT ID NCT07055555

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study looks at how a brief stressful event affects the ability to link new information with existing knowledge. Eighty healthy adults aged 18-35 will either undergo a stressful mock job interview and math test or a calm control task. Researchers will measure stress hormone levels and test memory performance to see if stress impairs learning.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this research could help explain why stress makes it harder to learn and remember, potentially guiding strategies to improve learning in schools and workplaces.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage study with only 80 participants. It measures short-term stress effects in a lab, so results may not apply to real-world chronic stress or to people with mental health conditions.
