Surgery showdown: which operation best treats stubborn constipation?
NCT ID NCT05352074
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This trial compares two types of colon surgery for people with severe slow-transit constipation that hasn't improved with other treatments. About 252 adults will be randomly assigned to have either a total colectomy (removing the whole colon) or a subtotal colectomy (removing most but not all of the colon). The goal is to see which surgery leads to better bowel function and quality of life.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- surgery (total colectomy with ileorectal anastomosis or subtotal colectomy with cecal-rectal anastomosis)
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this trial could identify which surgical approach offers better relief for people with severe, treatment-resistant constipation.
- What could go wrong
- This is a surgical trial with inherent risks like infection or bowel complications. Results may not apply to all patients, and surgery is a last resort after other treatments fail.
