Which stomach rebuild works best? new study aims to end debate

NCT ID NCT07441785

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study compares different ways to reconnect the digestive tract after removing the upper part of the stomach due to cancer. The goal is to find which method causes the fewest complications and gives patients the best quality of life. Researchers will follow 400 people in Russia who have this surgery to see how they recover and function long-term.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Proximal gastrectomy (surgery to remove the upper stomach) followed by different reconstruction techniques (e.g., esophagogastrostomy, double-tract reconstruction, jejunal interposition)

What this could lead to

If this study identifies the best reconstruction method, it could lead to better quality of life and fewer side effects like reflux and eating problems for future stomach cancer patients.

What could go wrong

This is an observational study comparing existing techniques, not testing a new treatment. It may not find a clear winner, and results may not apply to all patients or hospitals.
