Stockings vs. no stockings: can a simple sock save lives after surgery?

Summary

This study looks at whether wearing graduated compression stockings in the hospital, on top of taking blood-thinning medication for several weeks, can further reduce the risk of dangerous blood clots after high-risk surgery. About 8,600 adults having cancer, abdominal, or orthopedic surgery will be randomly assigned to receive either blood thinners plus stockings or blood thinners alone. All participants will get an ultrasound to check for clots, and the results will help decide if stockings are worth the cost and discomfort.
