New antibiotic beads aim to heal bone infections in bedsores

NCT ID NCT06283979

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This Phase II trial tests whether placing antibiotic-releasing beads (STIMULAN VG) into the wound during surgery, plus standard antibiotics, works better than standard care alone for bone infections linked to stage IV pressure ulcers. About 60 adults will be randomly assigned to one of two groups. Success is measured by complete wound closure at 8 weeks.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
STIMULAN VG (a calcium sulfate bead that releases antibiotics locally)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could offer a more effective way to treat bone infections in severe pressure ulcers, potentially reducing the need for repeat surgeries.
What could go wrong
This is a small Phase II trial with only 60 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The treatment involves surgery and antibiotics, which carry risks like infection or allergic reaction.
