New stem cell approach could help more sickle cell patients
NCT ID NCT03121001
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This phase II trial is testing a stem cell transplant from a half-matched donor for people with severe sickle cell disease. Participants receive chemotherapy, radiation, and immune-suppressing drugs before the transplant to help the new cells take hold. The main goal is to see if the donor stem cells successfully engraft by day 60, which could lead to better disease control.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
stem cell transplant from a half-matched donor
What this could lead to
If successful, this approach could offer a way to control severe sickle cell disease using a donor who is only half-matched, making transplants available to more patients.
What could go wrong
This is an early phase II trial with only 50 participants, so results may not apply broadly. The transplant carries risks like graft failure, infection, and side effects from chemotherapy and radiation.
