New stem cell approach aims to beat lymphoma without radiation
NCT ID NCT03125642
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This phase 2 study tests a stem cell transplant procedure for people with Hodgkin or non-Hodgkin lymphoma, including those with HIV. Participants receive high-dose chemotherapy followed by an infusion of their own stem cells. The goal is to see if this radiation-free approach can improve survival and reduce side effects compared to older methods.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
chemotherapy (etoposide, carmustine, cytarabine, melphalan) followed by stem cell transplant
What this could lead to
If successful, this approach could offer a better, radiation-free way to control lymphoma and improve long-term survival for patients, including those with HIV.
What could go wrong
This is a mid-stage trial with only 150 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The chemotherapy has serious side effects, and the transplant carries risks like infection and organ damage.
