Timing is everything: new trial aims to reduce transplant complications by adjusting when stem cells are given

NCT ID NCT07047456

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This phase 3 trial is testing whether changing the timing of stem cell infusion after a single umbilical cord blood transplant can lower the risk of severe acute graft-versus-host disease (aGVHD) in people with blood cancers. The study will enroll 134 participants who are in remission and receiving their first cord blood transplant. Researchers will compare different infusion times to see which leads to fewer severe aGVHD cases in the first 100 days.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

umbilical cord blood stem cells

What this could lead to

If successful, this could establish a simple timing strategy to lower the risk of severe graft-versus-host disease after cord blood transplants.

What could go wrong

This is a single-center trial with 134 participants, so results may not apply broadly. The intervention is a procedural change, not a new drug, so the impact may be modest.
