New pain block could cut opioid use after gallbladder surgery
NCT ID NCT06123117
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study compares two ways to manage pain after laparoscopic gallbladder removal. One group gets standard local anesthesia at the incision sites, while the other also receives a nerve block guided by the surgery camera. The goal is to see if the added block reduces pain and the need for opioid painkillers. About 850 adults having gallbladder surgery will take part.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
ropivacaine
What this could lead to
If it works, this could provide a better way to manage pain after gallbladder surgery, reducing the need for strong painkillers.
What could go wrong
This is an early-stage trial testing a procedure, not a new drug. Previous smaller studies have not shown a clear benefit for the added nerve block, so results may not be conclusive.
