Could a smaller surgery spare medullary thyroid cancer patients from lifelong pills?
NCT ID NCT07612293
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether removing only the cancerous part of the thyroid and nearby lymph nodes on one side is safe and effective for sporadic medullary thyroid cancer. Currently, all patients get the entire thyroid removed, which requires lifelong hormone pills and carries higher risks. The trial will enroll 100 adults to see if the less extensive surgery leads to remission and avoids the need for a second surgery.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Thyroid lobectomy with ipsilateral central neck dissection
What this could lead to
If successful, this could offer a less invasive surgical option for sporadic medullary thyroid cancer, avoiding lifelong thyroid hormone pills and reducing complication risks.
What could go wrong
This is an early-stage trial with only 100 participants. It may not prove that the less extensive surgery is as effective as total thyroidectomy, and some patients may still need a second surgery.
