Ultrasound after surgery: a new way to spot hidden infections?
NCT ID NCT07549880
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study is testing whether a simple bedside ultrasound can detect fluid buildup under the skin after open abdominal surgery and predict which patients will develop a surgical site infection. Researchers will follow 100 adults who had emergency or planned abdominal surgery, giving them three ultrasound scans of their wound in the first week after surgery. The goal is to see if this safe, non-invasive tool can help doctors catch infections earlier and improve recovery.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
What this could lead to
If successful, this could lead to a simple, non-invasive way to catch wound infections earlier after abdominal surgery, potentially improving recovery.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early observational study, not a treatment trial. It may not prove that ultrasound reliably predicts infection, and results may not apply to all patients or hospitals.
