Simple splint might ease wrist fracture pain in the ER
NCT ID NCT07553000
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether adding a lightweight SAM splint to usual pain relief helps adults with suspected wrist fractures feel less pain while waiting for X-rays in the emergency department. About 120 participants with moderate to severe pain will be randomly assigned to get a splint or not. Researchers will compare pain scores, painkiller use, and any problems like X-ray interference or splint side effects.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
SAM splint (a lightweight, moldable aluminum splint)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could show that adding a simple splint to usual pain relief helps ease pain while waiting for X-ray results.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial with only 120 participants. The splint may not provide extra pain relief and could interfere with X-ray images or cause minor side effects.
