Spleen-saving surgery for pancreatic cancer under study

NCT ID NCT07157605

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jul 23, 2026 · Updated 2 times

Summary

This study looks at whether the spleen can be safely left in place during surgery for left-sided pancreatic cancer. Currently, the spleen is removed as a standard part of the operation to ensure any cancer in the surrounding fat is also taken out. The study will check how often cancer actually spreads to the spleen area in 94 patients, to see if keeping the spleen might be a safe option in the future.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to
If the risk of cancer spread to the spleen area is low, this could lead to a change in standard surgery, allowing more patients to keep their spleen.
What could go wrong
This is an observational study with only 94 patients, so results may not apply to everyone. It is a first step and does not yet prove that spleen preservation is safe.
