New hope for migraine sufferers? Needle-Freezing technique targets pain hub

NCT ID NCT07370142

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tested a minimally invasive procedure called pulsed radiofrequency on a nerve bundle in the face (the sphenopalatine ganglion) to see if it could reduce pain in 55 people with chronic headaches or facial pain who hadn't gotten relief from medication. The procedure uses a short burst of energy to calm the nerve without damaging it. Researchers measured pain levels, quality of life, and medication use over six months to see if the treatment provides lasting relief.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

pulsed radiofrequency procedure

What this could lead to

If successful, this could offer a safe, non-drug option for long-term pain relief in people with hard-to-treat craniofacial pain.

What could go wrong

This is a small, single-center study with no control group, so results may not apply broadly. Pain relief may vary or be temporary.
