New scan could help doctors choose best treatment for kidney tumors

NCT ID NCT03996850

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether a special type of scan called SPECT/CT can help doctors make better decisions about treating kidney tumors. The scan uses a radioactive tracer to see how tumors behave. Researchers will check if the scan changes what doctors recommend for 102 patients with new kidney tumors. The goal is to see if this less invasive method can guide treatment choices.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Technetium Tc-99m sestamibi (a radioactive tracer used in imaging)

What this could lead to

If successful, this imaging method could help doctors decide on the best treatment for kidney tumors without needing invasive biopsies.

What could go wrong

This is an early-stage study focused on decision-making, not treatment outcomes. The imaging may not change decisions as expected, and results may not apply to all kidney tumor types.
