Could taking breaks from skin cancer drug keep it working?

NCT ID NCT04806646

First seen Jun 27, 2026 ยท Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This trial tests a new way of taking the drug sonidegib for people with advanced basal cell carcinoma that cannot be surgically removed. Instead of taking the drug continuously, patients who have already achieved a complete response will take it in cycles with breaks (14 days on/14 days off or 7 days on/21 days off). The goal is to see if this tailored schedule helps patients stay cancer-free for 12 months while reducing side effects and improving quality of life.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only โ€” not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
Sonidegib (Odomzo)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could offer a way for patients with advanced BCC to maintain their response with fewer drug side effects by taking breaks from treatment.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-phase trial with only 21 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The tailored schedule might not work for all patients, and side effects are still possible.
