Can a smart bassinet help premature babies sleep better?

NCT ID NCT05711927

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study looked at whether the SNOO Smart Sleeper, which plays white noise and gently rocks, helps preterm infants sleep more peacefully and have better vital signs compared to a traditional bassinet. Twenty preterm infants in the NICU each spent two three-hour sessions sleeping in either the SNOO or a non-moving, quiet bassinet. Researchers monitored their sleep stages, heart rate, and oxygen levels to see if the SNOO made a difference.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

SNOO Smart Sleeper (device that provides white noise and rocking motion)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could point toward a simple way to improve sleep and vital signs in preterm infants in the NICU.

What could go wrong

This is a very small, early study with only 20 infants, and the results may not apply to all preterm babies. The SNOO may not significantly improve sleep or vital signs.
