Spinal shot vs IV drip: which helps you recover faster from robotic surgery?

NCT ID NCT06349668

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This Phase 3 trial tests whether a single spinal injection of morphine and bupivacaine before robotic kidney or ureter surgery leads to better recovery than an intravenous lidocaine drip during surgery. About 220 adults scheduled for robotic upper urinary tract surgery will be randomly assigned to one of the two pain management methods. The main goal is to see if the spinal group reports less drop in wellbeing the day after surgery, measured by a standard recovery questionnaire.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

spinal morphine with bupivacaine

What this could lead to

If spinal morphine works better, it could become a standard way to improve recovery and reduce pain after robotic kidney or ureter surgery.

What could go wrong

This is a mid-stage trial with 220 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. Spinal morphine can cause itching, low blood pressure, or heart issues during surgery.
