First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tested a smartphone app that sends automated reminders to use personalized coping strategies for adults hospitalized with suicidal thoughts. Participants answered surveys up to six times daily, and when they reported high distress, some received prompts to use their safety plan. The goal was to see if the app is feasible, acceptable, and helps reduce suicidal thoughts.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
smartphone-based behavioral intervention with personalized coping strategy reminders
What this could lead to
If it works, this could point toward a practical, real-time tool to help people manage suicidal thoughts and stay safe after leaving the hospital.
What could go wrong
This is a small pilot study with only 103 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The intervention is still experimental and may not reduce suicidal thoughts as hoped.
