Heart patients get a digital nudge: app aims to boost pill-taking

NCT ID NCT06951451

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests a smartphone app called MED-AD that sends reminders and tracks medication use for people with heart disease, high blood pressure, or high cholesterol. About 1,000 adults in Oman will be randomly assigned to use the app, receive daily text reminders, or get usual care. Researchers will measure how well participants take their medications over 12 months, and whether the app leads to better blood pressure, cholesterol, and fewer heart complications.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
smartphone application (MED-AD)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could provide a simple, low-cost way to help heart patients stick to their medications and improve their health.
What could go wrong
This is a behavioral study, not a drug trial. Success depends on patients actually using the app, and results may not apply to those without smartphones or reading skills.
