Laser or drops? new study tests best first move for glaucoma

NCT ID NCT07310719

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study compares two first-line treatments for primary open-angle glaucoma or high eye pressure: a one-time laser procedure (selective laser trabeculoplasty) versus daily latanoprost eye drops. Researchers will track how well each lowers eye pressure and note any side effects over three months. The goal is to see if the laser is a safe and effective alternative to daily drops for Nigerian patients.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Selective laser trabeculoplasty (laser procedure) and latanoprost eye drops

What this could lead to

If successful, this could show that a one-time laser procedure is as safe and effective as daily eye drops for controlling eye pressure in glaucoma patients.

What could go wrong

This is a small, short-term study (138 patients, 3 months) in a single hospital, so results may not apply broadly. The laser may not lower pressure enough, or side effects could differ from drops.
