Can a sleep pill fight ICU confusion after heart surgery?

NCT ID NCT04092894

Summary

This study tested if a prescription sleep medication (suvorexant) could help older patients sleep better and reduce confusion (delirium) after major heart surgery while they were in the intensive care unit (ICU). It involved 100 patients aged 60+ who were randomly given either the real medication or a placebo pill for up to seven nights. Researchers used a special brain monitor to measure sleep quality and checked patients daily for signs of delirium.
