Back surgery pain relief: does a Two-Level nerve block beat a Single-Level one?
NCT ID NCT07363096
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study compares two ways of giving a nerve block (erector spinae plane block) to control pain after lumbar fusion surgery. Sixty adults undergoing back surgery will be randomly assigned to receive either a single-level or a two-level injection. Researchers will measure pain scores, opioid use, and side effects in the first 24 hours after surgery to see which method works better.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Erector spinae plane block (nerve block injection)
- What this could lead to
- If it works, this could show that a two-level nerve block provides better pain relief after lumbar fusion surgery than a single-level block.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early-stage trial with only 60 patients. It may not find a clear difference between the two techniques, and results may not apply to all spine surgeries.
