New hip block could match standard for Post-Surgery pain relief
NCT ID NCT06964282
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study compares two types of nerve blocks—the newer iliopsoas plane block (IPB) and the established PENG block—for controlling pain and helping recovery after total hip replacement. 118 adults will receive one of the two blocks before surgery, and neither they nor their doctors will know which one. The main goal is to see if IPB works as well as PENG for pain during movement 6 hours after surgery.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Ropivacaine
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that a newer, simpler nerve block (IPB) works as well as the standard block (PENG) for pain after hip replacement, giving doctors another good option.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage comparison study. The results may not apply to all patients or surgical approaches. Both blocks are already used, so the main risk is that IPB might not be as effective as PENG.
