Shockwaves in your heart: new device zaps artery calcium

NCT ID NCT07259239

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests a new device called the SoniCracker IVL, which uses tiny shockwaves to break up hard calcium deposits in heart arteries. The goal is to make it easier to place stents and improve blood flow. About 40 adults with calcified coronary arteries will be enrolled. Researchers will check if the device can be delivered safely and if it leads to successful stent placement without major heart complications.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

SoniCracker IVL device (a catheter that delivers shockwaves to break up calcium in heart arteries)

What this could lead to

If successful, this device could offer a safer, more effective way to treat heavily calcified heart arteries, potentially reducing the risk of heart attacks and the need for repeat procedures.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early feasibility study with only 40 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The device may fail to break up calcium or could cause artery damage, and long-term benefits are unknown.
