Can we predict who will suffer the most from sickle cell pain?

NCT ID NCT06139510

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study aims to find out why some people with sickle cell disease develop severe, disabling chronic pain while others do not. Researchers will enroll 70 participants aged 15 to 40 and use surveys, virtual visits, and in-person pain sensitivity tests to track pain and related outcomes over up to 48 months. The goal is to improve pain management and guide future studies on non-opioid treatments.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this could help doctors better predict who will develop severe chronic pain from sickle cell disease and guide future non-opioid pain treatments.

What could go wrong

This is an observational study, not a treatment trial. It will not directly improve pain for participants, and the findings may not lead to immediate changes in care.
