New pain block study aims to improve shoulder surgery recovery

NCT ID NCT06826846

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tested two methods of a nerve block for pain after arthroscopic shoulder surgery. One group received a single injection of numbing medicine before surgery, while the other group also had a small tube placed to deliver additional medicine every 8 hours after surgery. The goal was to see if the continuous method provides better pain relief, less opioid use, and higher patient satisfaction. The study involved 90 adults aged 18-80.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

bupivacaine

What this could lead to

If the catheter method works better, it could offer longer-lasting pain relief after shoulder surgery, reducing the need for strong painkillers.

What could go wrong

This is a small, completed study. The catheter method may not provide significantly better pain control and could carry a higher risk of infection or complications from the catheter.
