New painkiller could cut opioid use after shoulder surgery
NCT ID NCT07410182
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study compares a long-acting numbing drug (liposomal bupivacaine) to the standard version for pain relief after shoulder surgery. About 60 adults aged 18-60 will receive one of the two drugs as a nerve block before surgery. Researchers will track how much opioid pain medicine they need and their pain levels for 3 days after surgery.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
liposomal bupivacaine (a long-acting numbing medicine)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could provide better pain control and reduce the need for opioids after shoulder surgery.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-phase trial with only 60 people, so results may not apply to everyone. The liposomal version may not work better than the standard drug.
