Giving diabetes patients a stronger voice in their own care
NCT ID NCT07785440
First seen Aug 25, 2026 · Last updated Aug 26, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This trial tests a shared decision-making program for adults with type 2 diabetes. The program helps patients identify their concerns, learn about their condition and treatment options, and work together with doctors, nurses, and family to create a personalized care plan. Researchers will compare this approach to usual care to see if it boosts patients' confidence and involvement in decisions, reduces diabetes-related distress, and improves self-management behaviors. Participants will be followed for six weeks after the program to measure these outcomes.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- A shared decision-making intervention program based on the Ottawa Decision Support Framework, including a Question Prompt List handbook, educational sessions, and collaborative treatment planning with doctors, nurses, and family.
- What this could lead to
- If effective, this program could become a standard way to help people with type 2 diabetes feel more confident and involved in their care, potentially improving self-management and emotional well-being.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early-stage study with 70 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The program's success depends on how well it is delivered and received, and it may not lead to lasting changes in diabetes control.
