New therapy targets shame to save teen lives

NCT ID NCT07294001

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This pilot study tests a new type of talk therapy called Shame-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (SF-CBT) for teens hospitalized after a suicide attempt or with severe suicidal thoughts. The therapy aims to reduce feelings of shame, which are linked to suicide risk. About 42 teens aged 13-18 will receive either SF-CBT or standard supportive therapy, and researchers will track whether the therapy is feasible and acceptable, and whether it lowers suicidal thoughts and behaviors.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Shame-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (SF-CBT)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could point toward a new therapy that reduces suicide risk in teens by directly targeting shame.

What could go wrong

This is a very small pilot study (42 teens) testing feasibility, not effectiveness. The therapy may not reduce suicide risk more than standard support.
