NCT ID NCT06953310
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests a program called Shamba Maisha that provides farming tools, training, and school gardens to families in Kenya. The goal is to reduce food insecurity and poverty, which are linked to higher STI and HIV risk in adolescent girls. Researchers will follow 900 girls and their caregivers for 18 months to see if the program lowers rates of gonorrhea and chlamydia, improves mental health, and strengthens family relationships.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
agricultural intervention (farming equipment, training, and school-based farming activities)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could point toward a sustainable, community-based way to reduce STIs and HIV in adolescent girls by tackling poverty and food insecurity.
What could go wrong
This is an early-stage trial with 900 participants, and previous poverty-alleviation programs have shown mixed results on STI/HIV outcomes. The approach is complex and may not work as hoped.
