Could a common diabetes drug shield heart transplant patients from kidney damage?

Summary
This study tests whether empagliflozin, a drug used for diabetes, can protect the kidneys and heart in people who have received a heart transplant. About 200 veterans who had a heart transplant at least three months ago will take either the drug or a placebo for one year. The goal is to see if the drug helps prevent kidney and heart problems that often occur due to the lifelong anti-rejection medicines required after transplant.
