Diabetes drug empagliflozin studied for kidney disease mineral effects
NCT ID NCT06435858
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026
Summary
This phase 2 trial is testing whether the diabetes drug empagliflozin changes how the kidneys handle calcium, phosphate, and magnesium in people with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD). Forty adults will take either empagliflozin or a placebo for two weeks, then switch after a two-week break. The goal is to better understand electrolyte balance, not to treat the disease itself.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Empagliflozin
What this could lead to
If successful, this could help doctors understand how SGLT2 inhibitors affect electrolyte balance in ADPKD, potentially guiding future treatment strategies.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-phase study (40 people) looking only at short-term effects over 2 weeks. It is not designed to test long-term benefits or risks, and results may not apply to all patients.
