Anesthesia choice may boost kidney transplant success
NCT ID NCT00337051
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tested whether using sevoflurane gas for anesthesia during kidney transplant surgery helps the new kidney recover faster than standard propofol anesthesia. 120 adults receiving a kidney transplant were randomly assigned to one of the two anesthetics. Researchers tracked kidney function for a year after surgery to see if sevoflurane reduced damage from the blood flow interruption that occurs during transplant.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Sevoflurane (an inhaled anesthetic gas)
- What this could lead to
- If it works, this could show that choosing sevoflurane during surgery helps transplanted kidneys start working sooner, reducing the need for dialysis after transplant.
- What could go wrong
- This is a completed Phase 3 trial, but results are not yet widely confirmed. The benefit may be small or not apply to all transplant patients. Anesthesia risks like allergic reactions or rare malignant hyperthermia exist.
