Blood marker may uncover fracture risk hidden from bone scans

NCT ID NCT07677072

First seen Jun 30, 2026 · Last updated Jul 01, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study investigates whether a protein called lumican, found in the blood, can identify postmenopausal women who have fragile bones but normal bone density scans. About 100 women will have their bone density, muscle strength, and blood lumican levels measured. The goal is to see if lumican levels can reveal a hidden fragility that standard tests miss.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this could lead to a simple blood test that better identifies women at risk of fractures, beyond what bone density scans show.

What could go wrong

This is an early observational study with only 98 participants, so results may not apply to all women. Lumican levels may not reliably predict fracture risk.
