Massive study hints diabetes drug may shield brain from dementia

NCT ID NCT05768945

First seen Nov 11, 2025 · Last updated May 15, 2026 · Updated 18 times

Summary

This study looked at medical records from over 740,000 older adults with diabetes to see if a drug called semaglutide (used for diabetes) might lower the risk of developing dementia or Alzheimer's disease. Researchers compared people taking semaglutide to those taking other diabetes drugs. The goal was to find out if semaglutide could be repurposed to protect the brain, but this was a data analysis, not a treatment trial.
