Can women give themselves the birth control shot after an abortion? study says maybe.

NCT ID NCT05505435

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study looked at whether people who have an abortion are more likely to keep using a birth control shot if they can inject it themselves at home versus getting it from a nurse. About 263 participants chose either self-injection or clinic injection of the same medication. Researchers followed up at 3 and 6 months to see who continued using the shot and how satisfied they were.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

depot medroxyprogesterone acetate (birth control shot)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could show that self-injection of birth control is a practical option for patients after abortion, increasing convenience and autonomy.

What could go wrong

This is a small, completed Phase 4 study at a single clinic, so results may not apply broadly. Self-injection requires proper training and may not suit everyone.
