Can a CGM keep seafarers with diabetes safe at sea?
NCT ID NCT07251257
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study looks at whether continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) can help seafarers who need insulin manage their diabetes while working at sea. Fifty insulin-dependent seafarers will wear a CGM for 12 months and track their glucose levels during work and rest. The goal is to see if CGMs are accurate and practical enough to replace finger-prick tests, which could lead to fairer maritime rules.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) system
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that CGMs are reliable enough for seafarers with diabetes, potentially leading to updated safety rules that allow them to work more freely at sea.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early feasibility study with only 50 participants, so results may not apply to all seafarers. The CGM accuracy in harsh sea conditions is still unproven.
