Why your dental numbing shot might not work: gene and inflammation clues
NCT ID NCT07532200
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study examines why some people with a painful tooth infection (irreversible pulpitis) don't get fully numb from a standard dental injection. Researchers will measure levels of certain genes and inflammatory markers in the tooth pulp to see if they predict anesthesia success. About 100 adults with infected lower molars will participate. The goal is to understand biological factors behind failed dental numbing, which could eventually lead to better pain control strategies.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could help dentists predict which patients might need extra anesthesia for painful tooth infections, improving pain management.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small observational study, not a treatment trial. It only looks for links between genes, inflammation, and anesthesia success—it won't directly improve care yet.
