Could a common diabetes drug tame gout flares?

NCT ID NCT06674109

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether empagliflozin (Jardiance), a drug used for diabetes, can lower uric acid levels and reduce inflammation in people with gout. Sixty adults with gout and high uric acid will take either the drug or a placebo daily for 12 weeks. Researchers will measure changes in uric acid, inflammation markers, and gout flares to see if a larger trial is worthwhile.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Empagliflozin (Jardiance) 10 mg daily

What this could lead to

If it works, this could point toward a new treatment option for gout that also reduces inflammation.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-phase trial with only 60 people over 12 weeks. The results may not lead to a proven treatment, and side effects from empagliflozin are possible.
