New ultrasound test could spot hidden cause of infertility without surgery

NCT ID NCT07416591

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study is testing whether a simple ultrasound procedure, called saline infusion sonohysterography (SIS), can accurately detect pelvic adhesions (scar tissue) in infertile women. Researchers will compare SIS results to those from laparoscopy, the current standard. If SIS proves reliable, it could offer a less invasive, cheaper, and more comfortable way to diagnose a common cause of infertility.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

sterile saline

What this could lead to

If successful, this could provide a less invasive, radiation-free way to diagnose pelvic adhesions in infertile women, potentially replacing more invasive tests.

What could go wrong

This is a diagnostic accuracy study, not a treatment trial. The test may not be as accurate as hoped, and results may not apply to all infertility cases.
