New cocktail of drugs and radiation aims to stop prostate cancer spread
NCT ID NCT04262154
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether adding the immunotherapy drug atezolizumab and targeted radiation (SBRT) to standard hormone therapy (abiraterone, prednisone, and leuprolide) is safe and works better for men with newly diagnosed metastatic prostate cancer that hasn't been treated yet. The trial enrolls 28 men and will measure how many are still free of cancer progression after two years.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Atezolizumab (immunotherapy), abiraterone (hormone therapy), prednisone, GnRH analog (leuprolide), and stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT)
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this combination could offer a more effective first-line treatment for men with metastatic prostate cancer that has not yet been treated.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early-phase (Phase 2) study with only 28 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. Adding immunotherapy and radiation may increase side effects without clear benefit.
