Blood test could replace CT scans for head injuries

NCT ID NCT07036146

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study is testing whether a blood test for a protein called S100B can help doctors quickly rule out brain injury in people who come to the emergency room with a head injury. The test is already known to be very accurate at predicting when no brain injury is present. If it works well, it could reduce the need for CT scans and shorten ER visits. The study will include 1,000 patients of all ages, including pregnant women.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to
If successful, this could provide a quick blood test to rule out brain injury after head trauma, reducing unnecessary CT scans and emergency room visits.
What could go wrong
This is an observational study, not a treatment trial. The test is already known to be highly sensitive, but it may not change clinical practice or be adopted widely.
