New hope for adults with HLH: gentler treatment combo under study
NCT ID NCT06160791
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jul 23, 2026 · Updated 5 times
Summary
This phase 2 trial is testing a combination of ruxolitinib and a reduced-intensity version of the standard HLH-94 regimen (dexamethasone and etoposide) in 36 adults newly diagnosed with hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH), a rare condition where the immune system attacks the body. The goal is to see if this approach can control the disease with fewer toxic side effects. Participants will receive treatment for up to 4 weeks, and researchers will measure how many respond to therapy.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Ruxolitinib, etoposide, dexamethasone
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could offer a less toxic treatment option for adults with HLH, potentially improving outcomes while reducing side effects.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early-phase trial (36 participants) with no control group, so results may not be definitive. The combination may still cause serious side effects or fail to control the disease.
