Can magnetic pulses ease Schizophrenia's 'Negative' symptoms?

NCT ID NCT04318977

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether a non-invasive brain stimulation technique called repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) can help reduce negative symptoms of schizophrenia, such as lack of motivation, social withdrawal, and reduced emotional expression. Researchers are comparing two types of rTMS (high-frequency and theta burst stimulation) against a placebo in 62 adults aged 18–75 with stable medication. The main goal is to see if these treatments improve scores on a standard symptom scale.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could offer a new way to reduce negative symptoms of schizophrenia, such as low motivation or social withdrawal.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage study with only 62 participants, so results may not apply widely. The treatment is also not a cure and may not work for everyone.
